Fat Scans

Fat scan shows up 'true' obesity
Scientists say they have developed a 3D scanner that can accurately determine if a person is truly obese.

Currently, doctors gauge fatness with a calculation of body mass index (BMI). But BMI is flawed - people with lots of muscle are considered overweight.

Instead of relying on weight and height measurements, as BMI does, the scan takes into account body shape and how much fat a person carries.

Pedometers Increase Waking

People who set daily walking goals for themselves and clip on a pedometer to count the number of steps they take go farther in life than those who don't - a whole mile farther, in fact.

New research from Stanford Medical School shows that people who use a pedometer walk about 2,000 steps - or 1 mile - more every day than those who don't, and along the way they lose a little weight and lower their blood pressure.

Is MSG Making You Fat

Obesity Secret Ignored
I am convinced that one of the leading causes of obesity is being totally ignored by both by public officials and the media, despite the fact that there is tremendous scientific evidence confirming its role.

In 1969, neuroscientist Dr. John Olney discovered that feeding newborn rats MSG (monosodium glutamate) caused them to become grossly obese.

Each time he repeated the experiment, he saw the same thing. Subsequent studies have shown that this phenomenon occurred in most animal species, indicating that it wasn't something peculiar to the rat.

The effects of MSG are now so well established that the substance is routinely used in experimental obesity studies on animals.

In fact, scientists have also discovered how it was producing the obesity.

Holidays Gains

Reports of your holiday weight gain have been greatly exaggerated. Media stories often suggest that the average person gains 7 to 10 pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas. And in surveys, people say they gain, on average, about five pounds this time of year.
But several studies now show that the average weight gain during the winter holidays is just one pound.
The news isn’t all good. Most people don’t ever lose the pound of weight they put on during the holidays, according to a report in The New England Journal of Medicine. Since the average weight gain during adulthood is about one to two pounds a year, that means much of midlife weight gain can be explained by holiday eating.

Plastic Surgery Risk

Plastic Surgery Complications Rare is generally safe, but like any operation, it does carry risk of complications. Grammy winner Kanye West's mother died Saturday after having plastic surgery, and an initial coroner's investigation said Donda West's death may have been due to surgical complications.

It is wise to have all procedures at certified office-based surgery centers over a 2-year period, researchers found serious complications occurred in 1 in 299 cases. Complications included bruises, infections, respiratory problems and heart problems. Death occurred in 1 in 58,810 procedures. The risks from surgery done in offices is comparable to procedures done in hospitals, according to the researchers.

Researcher Work on Aging Pill

Researchers said they had found more ways to activate the body’s own anti-aging defenses —

Their study, published in the journal Cell, helps explain why animals fed very low-calorie diets live longer, but it also offers new ways to try to replicate the effects of these diets using a pill instead of hunger, the researchers said.
Last year, researchers showed that stimulating SIRT1 can help yeast cells live longer.
hey are also very important for keeping the cells healthy and alive when they undergo stress and DNA damage, as we undergo every day during the aging process.”These two genes, SIRT3 and SIRT4, they make proteins that go into mitochondria.hese exciting new data further validate sirtuins as attractive targets for drug development to treat diseases of aging

Egyptain Beauty Secrets

The ancient Egyptians rubbed perfumed oil on themselves, which was usually made from scented wood and flowers that has been combined with fat or oil. All of these ingredients were placed into a pot. The oil was complete once all of the scent had been absorbed. Since Egypt delivered an unforgiving climate, the perfumed oil not only made you smell nice, but also prevented the skin from the damaging effects of dry weather. Another tradition involving the perfumed oil was seen during times of celebration. When a party was being held, servants placed cones of perfumed grease on top of the heads of arriving guests. The grease melted as the party heated up, which provided a cooing effect as it ran down their faces. The glamour of the ancient Egyptians is a major element of our eternal fascination with them. Entranced as we may be by the politics of Tutankhamun’s reign, it is the jet wigs and almond eyes that get us every time. For Alexander McQueen’s autumn/winter 08 catwalk collection, make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury paid homage to Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra, using colours since released as the limited-edition line MAC for McQueen. So successful a look was it for Taylor that it took her some years to renounce it; a pastiche Egyptian rigout is still the favoured choice of girls at fancy-dress parties. Not only do we wish to walk like an Egyptian, we enjoy daubing our faces like one, too.

Global Warming Fights Obesity

America's obesity epidemic and global warming might not seem to have much in common. But public health experts suggest people can attack them both by cutting calories and carbon dioxide at the same time.

How? Get out of your car and walk or bike half an hour a day instead of driving. And while you're at it, eat less red meat. That's how Americans can simultaneously save the planet and their health, say doctors and climate scientists.

The payoffs are huge, although unlikely to happen. One numbers-crunching scientist calculates that if all Americans between 10 and 74 walked just half an hour a day instead of driving, they would cut the annual U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas, by 64 million tons.

Appetite Suppressant Foods = Apple

An apple a day keeps cravings at bay. High-fiber foods like apples generally require more chewing time, giving your body extra time to register the fact that you're no longer hungry. Therefore, you're less likely to overeat.

One study in Brazil found that women who ate the equivalent of three small apples a day as part of a healthy diet lost significantly more weight than those who didn't eat apples. And apples are also a natural anti-inflammatory.

Injectable Fat

You can forgo the pharmaceutical filler route and use your own body fat as filler. Autologous fat injections or fat transfer are terms used to define injectable soft-tissue augmentation using your own fat. More commonly used in conjunction with other surgical procedures, your fat can be extracted, processed and reinjected into your lips, facial creases or hands. There is no risk of allergy and your body won't reject the graft. Typically, the fat is extracted from the abdomen, buttocks or thighs through liposuction techniques or a pinpoint incision with manual suction. Fat transfer requires local anesthesia at a minimum, and calls for significant downtime with several weeks or more of swelling and bruising when larger quantities of fat are removed. If fat is harvested from a limited area, and small amounts are injected into limited areas, recovery may only be a few days. It may require a few weeks for swelling and bruising to diminish if large quantities of fat and areas are injected. Some of the fat injected will be reabsorbed over time, so you may need more than one treatment to truly achieve and maintain the fullness you desire.

Lithium An Anti-Aging Medication?

Drug Commonly Used To Treat Bipolar Disorder Dramatically Increases Lifespan In Worms
Nematode worms treated with lithium show a 46 percent increase in lifespan, raising the tantalizing question of whether humans taking the mood affecting drug are also taking an anti-aging medication.

Lithium has been used to treat mood affective disorders, including bipolar disease for decades.
Note: I am not recommending this medication I am only reporting this study.

Trendy Trash

Who could have imagined that even garbage could look chic? Apparently Ecoist did, which is why their purses and other accessories made from recycled newspaper, original candy wrappers look so stunning. The assortment includes very usable items such as the Jumbo Coin Pouch ($22), the Jumbo Anything/Everything bag ($28), and the Shoulder Bag ($58). Their Confetti collection (my favorite) also has bracelets and lovely placemats ($68). Many of the accessories (such as the Luna Bar collection) are limited, so you need to order pretty well in advance if you want to grab them for the gifting season.
