Botox The Cure All

Botulinum toxin ("botox") is a very powerful and often fatal poison produced by a rare type of food poisoning bacteria. The toxin blocks the activity of 'cholinergic' nerves which control muscles and glands, causing glands to stop secretion and muscles to become paralysed. But in tiny doses and applied to specific structures, "botox" has many medical uses. Lim and Seet's paper describes the early medical use of botulinum toxin in treating eye-squint, then its wider role in treating pain, excess glandular secretion and muscle spasm disorders, and its best-known use as a wrinkle remover in cosmetic surgery.

The authors go on to suggest a wide range of possible uses for "botox" such as calming restless legs, improving breathing in asthma, reducing sweating, and performing a 'chemical liposuction' by removing excessive fat. In theory, botulinum toxin might be used to treat a broad range of pain syndromes, and to reduce activity for all types of glands and muscles that receive their nerve supply from the cholinergic system.

This judge for this year's prize was the internationally famous neuroscientist VS Ramachandran of the University of California at San Diego, USA. Professor Ramachandran described the paper as: "A scholarly overview containing many suggestions for potentially valuable new directions of research"

Brainey Beauty

They come from a site about a new neurofeedback system developed by Bill Scott, who has been a leader in the field for many years.

I can't get into all of his pages, but he seems to have developed a system that can take the EEG waves produced by an individual's brain and to create a visual image of the activity.

What makes these images so exciting is that they are fractal -- yet more evidence that the brain is a complex, nonlinear system, as I've been preaching at you for some time

Boost Breast s With Botox

Boost Breasts With Botox
For years, Botox has lifted frown lineson many women. It was the top nonsurgical cosmetic procedure for women in 2006, according to the American Society FOR Asethetic Plastic Surgery. Now, doctors in Europe and Canada are finding it may give saggy breasts a boost, too. Botox won't change your size or shape, but it can temporarily papalyze the pectoral muscles, lifting the breast tissue. Since Botox is temporary, and the muscle is large, it can only work on smaller breasts, explains Nodar Janas, MD, founder of Meso Boutique, a center for nonsurgical cosmetic treatment in Great Neck, New yourk. Whether this procedure migrates to practices in the States still remains to be seen.

Mood Altering Exercise

It's about that time of year when the sight of wool makes your skin crawl — literally.

We've been insulated by layers of clothing (and the occasional comfort food) and it's finally time to peel it all away. With spring in sight the longer days and better weather mean a renewed energy to commit to your exercise routine. Your mood may just depend on it!

Skin Turns To Art

A blush, at once ephemeral and timeless, is what led Ariana Page Russell to start photographing her skin. Her skin disorder, dermatographia, is what turned photographing her skin into an artistic obsession.

"People have said, you know, for me, skin turns into a canvas. I use my skin as a canvas," Russell said.

Dermatographia, which literally means "writing on the skin," is a disorder that produces hivelike welts on the skin when scratched. Russell, 29, always blushed easily while growing up, but it wasn't until her teens that she noticed she could draw designs and patterns on her skin.

Art Imitating Life

"I just thought there's something really powerful in that because I have no control over it. It just happens," Russell said. "And I wanted to kind of capture that feeling of vulnerability and just that kind of fleeting thing that happens in the blush."

Skinny Songs

"Skinny jeans, skinny jeans, you're still hanging 'round

In the back of my closet and that's bringin' me down

this morning, I woke up, and made me a vow

skinny jeans, gonna get back, into you somehow."

It's a song that may never top the pop charts. And you probably won't find it at your local karaoke bar, either.

But some women say the track — just one of 10 offerings on a new CD titled "Skinny Songs" — has helped them stay on track to achieve their weight-loss goals.

Diet experts remain split on whether the songs would actually be helpful to women who hope to lose weight. And Heidi Roizen, the innovator of "Skinny Songs," says that the CD is non-scientific and is not based on any diet or psychological research that can attest to its efficacy.

Computer Programs That Read Minds

If you're paranoid, you might want to look the other way — according to a new study, someone hoping to peer into your thoughts may one day have an interesting tool to help them do just that.

Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley have developed a computer program that can predict what a person is looking at by analyzing his or her brain activity.

In a letter published in the journal Nature, Jack L. Gallant and his colleagues report their computer program correctly identified which single picture out of 120 photos a person was looking at 72 to 92 percent of the time.

Fat Protein Discovered

The protein, called TRAP (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase), "stimulates the formation of new fat cells and can thus precipitate the development of obesity," the Institute said in a statement.

The research was based on cell cultures and mice studies, and showed that patients with obesity have excessive levels of the protein.

"This protein is potentially useful in the treatment of conditions involving morbid cachexia (weight loss), such as cancer diseases," professor Goeran Andersson, who led the study, said.

"The discovery can also lead to new ways of treating obesity based on the inhibition of this protein's effect," he said.

The study lasted four years and followed 14 obese women, Andersson told AFP.

The results were published Wednesday in the US online journal Public Library of Science.
