Fountain Of Youth Within Grasp

In two-year old mice, Californian researchers found that they could rejuvenate skin to look more youthful.

Further analysis published in the journal Genes and Development showed the skin had the same genetic profile as the skin of newborn mice.

The team said the research would most likely lead to treatments to improve healing in older human patients.

They stressed it was unlikely to be a potential "fountain of youth" but could help older people heal as quickly from injury as they did when they were younger.

The protein in question - NF-kappa-B - is thought to play a role in numerous aspects of ageing.

It acts as a regulator, causing a wide range of other genes to be more or less active.

Lead researcher, Dr Howard Chang, from the Stanford School of Medicine in California, said the findings supported the theory that ageing is the result of specific genetic changes rather than accumulated wear and tear.

A study dated – December 6, 2007 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil --recently published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology reports on the discovery of caffeine’s novel benefit in slenderizing thighs.

A research team studied 99 women treated with a cream consisting mostly of a 7 percent caffeine solution. The women used the cream twice daily for 30 days.

When the researchers took their subjects’ measurements at the end of the study, the slimming effect was clear. More than 80 percent of the women had a reduction in the circumference of their upper and lower thighs. Nearly 68 percent also reduced their hip measurements.

Whether caffeine banishes cellulite is less clear. The researchers assessed cellulite changes with a handheld imaging instrument that reveals microcirculation in fat tissue. Imaging showed little change in cellulite even in the hips and thighs that slimmed down. The researchers speculate that the 30-day trial might not have been long enough for the cream to act on cellulite.


“This is no cure for cellulite”, said lead researcher Omar Lupi of the Federal University of then State of Rio de Janeiro. “But it can help women who want to look thinner. Exercise is still the best way to go.”

America's obesity epidemic and global warming might not seem to have much in common. But public health experts suggest people can attack them both by cutting calories and carbon dioxide at the same time.

How? Get out of your car and walk or bike half an hour a day instead of driving. And while you're at it, eat less red meat. That's how Americans can simultaneously save the planet and their health, say doctors and climate scientists.

The payoffs are huge, although unlikely to happen. One numbers-crunching scientist calculates that if all Americans between 10 and 74 walked just half an hour a day instead of driving, they would cut the annual U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas, by 64 million tons.

Injectable Fat

You can forgo the pharmaceutical filler route and use your own body fat as filler. Autologous fat injections or fat transfer are terms used to define injectable soft-tissue augmentation using your own fat. More commonly used in conjunction with other surgical procedures, your fat can be extracted, processed and reinjected into your lips, facial creases or hands. There is no risk of allergy and your body won't reject the graft. Typically, the fat is extracted from the abdomen, buttocks or thighs through liposuction techniques or a pinpoint incision with manual suction. Fat transfer requires local anesthesia at a minimum, and calls for significant downtime with several weeks or more of swelling and bruising when larger quantities of fat are removed. If fat is harvested from a limited area, and small amounts are injected into limited areas, recovery may only be a few days. It may require a few weeks for swelling and bruising to diminish if large quantities of fat and areas are injected. Some of the fat injected will be reabsorbed over time, so you may need more than one treatment to truly achieve and maintain the fullness you desire.
