Here is the manicure’s next generation: Sheets of metallic film are heat-adhered to the nail, then filed into shape. The films, by a company called Minx, need no drying and last, without a chip, for about two weeks. Though it sounds potentially tacky, the result is sleek, slightly androidy, and incredibly cool-looking. Ten gleaming silver fingertips with black tiger stripes are dramatic; if you’re timid, start with a single gold pinkie. You can also customize the films with a photo (your pet) or logo (AC/DC). Have yours done by Honey, who has a space at De Lux. For $55, she’ll do a mini manicure and apply a full set of Minx. The procedure requires some setup, so make an appointment.

MisikkoThe Very Best In Flat Irons

How to Use a Flat Iron
A flat iron is a flexible styling tool that has come a long way from the scary torture devices of ages past. Flat irons today are safe, gentle on your hair and can be used not only to straighten, but also to make quick curls and flips. Like any tool, the key is knowing how to use it.
Could you add this text link?

Prepare Your Hair:

* Styling products, grease and dirt that build up in your hair every day must be thoroughly cleaned away before you use a flat iron or your hair will stick, clump and easily damage.
* For manageable hair that responds well to styling and remains healthy afterwards, you'll need to shampoo and condition first.
* Use quality hydrating shampoos and conditioners that will prime your hair for the rigors of styling. This can be right before using a flat iron or the previous night.
* While hair is wet, use a thermal spray or heat treatment. Using it on wet hair is allows it to distribute evenly and soften hair as it dries. This treatment will protect your hair, and increase the life of the style you're after
* Then blow your hair dry - even flat irons that are "safe" for damp hair will not produce the best results without completely dry hair. (Don't be concerned at this point with straightening your hair; just dry it.)
* We highly recommend a ceramic heated ionic hair dryer for gentler heat that dries your hair faster and reduces frizz, static and hair shaft damage. We have a great selection including T3 Tourmaline dryers and Elchim hair dryers.

The Right Flat Iron For You

* A professional ceramic flat iron, unlike cheaper consumer flat irons, will have a ceramic heater and thick ceramic layers baked onto the plates. ("Nano-ceramic" means there are only small particles of ceramic; many lower grade irons use this technique or apply a light ceramic coating that easily scrapes off.)
* Any ceramic flat iron produces negative ions and far infrared heat which is much more gentle to your hair, seals hair follicles to preserve moisture and ultimately conditions hair for added shine and health. A tourmaline flat iron or a titanium flat iron combines these elements with ceramic to increase the ionic output & shine.
* As long as you go with a professional quality ceramic flat iron, you're making the healthiest choice for your hair - but you still need to pick the right size.
* Flat irons with plates 1" - 1.5" wide are fine for most hair types, as long as your hair is short-medium length. For finer hair, a narrower plate is sufficient. In general these smaller irons are lighter and easier to control.
* Flat irons with 2" plates or larger are great if you have long hair and a smaller iron would just make your styling more tedious.
* You can also use larger plates for thicker, curlier hair and they might save some time, but you'll sacrifice easy maneuverability - which might not be worth it if you use your iron frequently.
* Plates with rounded edges are superior for curls and flips - and won't leave any "dents" in your hair.

Temperature

* You don't want to use more heat than necessary when styling your hair. If your iron has variable temperature settings, you have more styling flexibility and control.
* For thick, coarse, or extra curly hair that is hard to style, a higher heat setting between 350-400 degrees F will be more effective.
* For fine, damaged or chemically treated hair, use lower heat settings, below 300 degrees F (but start with the lowest heat setting and work up if necessary).
* Normal hair can be heated at around 300-380 degrees F.

Choosing a Flat Iron

* Now that you know what you're looking for, you have a lot of choices in front of you. These days you can choose by colors (basic black, blue, green, purple, silver and yes - the famous pink flat iron - no longer limited to the pink CHI flat iron!
* Well established name-brand tools like the CHI flat iron, FHI flat iron or Corioliss flat iron might cost more, but many people find it worthwhile to know what they're getting into from the numerous reviews and magazine endorsements that can be found.
* Lower profile flat irons like the Infrashine flat iron or the HAI Convertable flat iron may be surrounded by less hype, but have been around long enough to build consumer confidence as well.
* Of course, price & features matter to most of us and will probably be the most important factors in your choice. See our flat iron comparison chart to easily compare features & prices and choose the best flat iron for you!

Using A Flat Iron
salon secrets 101

* Check out our Salon Secrets video series (also featured on this page) to see expert tips from a licensed hairdresser on professional straightening and styling at home!
* Unless using a wet-to-dry flat iron, make sure your hair is clean and completely dry before styling. Any moisture could cause it to frizz right up. If it feels cool to the touch, it's probably still damp.
* Use a comb and get all the tangles out of your hair - then make sections no wider than the plate size of your iron. Use clips to keep your hair separated while you style. (See our combs and clips.)
* Keep sections small! The most common mistake women make with flat irons is to try to iron too much of their hair at once. This leads to uneven heating and therefore uneven styling. Small sections mean less passes with the iron and straighter hair!
* Too much hair in the iron also leads to another mistake - heating your hair longer to get it to straighten. Not only will it not have the desired effect when the section is too big, this prolonged heating leads to damage.
* Once you have a manageable section, press it between the plates close to your scalp and, maintaining gentle pressure, draw the iron down to the tips of your hair. Your movement should be even and moderately fast - don't allow the iron to linger on any spot for long. With some practice you'll see how much attention your hair needs to get it just right.

Flipping with a Flat Iron

* This technique is the same as straightening with a flat iron; except when you near the tip of your hair, turn the iron in the direction you want the flip and glide it the rest of the way through. Experiment with starting at different points along your hair for different volumes of flip!
* Check out the video to the left for tips on perfect flips - and some helpful do's and don'ts that'll get you a style that looks like you paid big bucks for it!

Curling with A Flat Iron

* If your flat iron has rounded or curved plates, it's easier to create curls. Check out the third video in our flat iron styling series for a step by step professional demonstration!
* Unlike a curling iron, you aren't wrapping your hair around the iron and curling up to your head. Instead, clamp a 1" section of your hair close to your scalp with the iron and turn the flat iron about 1 and a half turns in the direction you want to curl.
* Firmly hold the flat iron at this angle, and pull it through the length of the strand of hair while maintaining the flat iron's position.
* Repeat for the rest of your curls - if you have long hair, you can pin them up as you go to make sure they stay until the finishing process.
* It may be tedious the first few times you curl with a flat iron, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be curling quickly and easily.

Protect Your Style

* To keep your hair styled perfectly for the whole day or night, use a lightweight finishing spray to keep your hair in place.
* Take good care of your flat iron! It's a great piece of equipment and not exactly cheap to replace, so simply storing it in a heat proof pouch - or using one for safe travel - will help you protect your iron and keep using it for a long, long time. You can also set your iron down on this heat proof surface during styling to protect counters from possible heat damage.
* Clean your flat iron from time to time - frequently if you use leave in conditioners or heat serums, every week or so if not. Build-up on the plates can cause your hair to snag and shorten the life of the plates themselves. Heat your iron and then wipe it down with a non-abrasive cloth - use a flat iron cleaner if you use leave-in treatments frequently, but avoid chemical solvents not meant for cleaning your iron.

Dysport the newest version of Botox injection

Newest Cellulite Treatment

Scientists believe they may have developed a new cosmetic treatment for cellulite a condition that affects the majority of women.

The treatment uses laser energy to stimulate collagen formation, tighten the skin and reduce fatty tissue, in combination with fat transplantation to fill in the depressed areas.

The patient's own fat is injected into the area, producing visible signs of improvement and few adverse effects, according to a study in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal.

Study author Dr Robert Gotkin, a cosmetic surgeon in New York, commented: "The search for the cause of cellulite and effective treatments is ongoing; however, the combination of a minimally-invasive pulsed laser treatment and autologous fat transplantation represents a viable option for women who have severe cases of cellulite."

Dr Foad Nahai, the journal's editor-in-chief, added that although there is currently no cure for cellulite, the latest research provides hope for those most affected by the condition.

Cellulite can affect the skin of the lower limbs, abdomen and pelvic region and its development is thought to be associated with hormones.

Eat Yourself Beautiful Collagen Marshmallows

Sweet skin secrets: Collagen Marshmallows

So many beauty treatments involve an element of suffering that it's great to hear of one that involves nothing but a tasty treat. Whether this one works is another matter altogether, but I was amused and intrigued to hear about these wrinkle-busting collagen marshmallows, which have recently reached our shores from Japan - the home of weird beauty.

The plump and juicy 'mallows contain 3000mg collagen peptides per pack, and are said to bump up the body's collagen levels, in turn aiding skin flexibility, softness and resiliency.

I have to say I'm not immediately convinced by the science, but they look very tasty and they'd make a lovely gift. Available in Harvey Nichols or online: £9.99 at Eat Yourself Beautiful

Possible Side Effects with Latisse

Possible side effects.
The most common side effects after using LATISSE® solution are an itching sensation in the eyes and/or eye redness. This was reported in approximately 4% of patients. LATISSE® solution may cause other less common side effects which typically occur on the skin close to where LATISSE® is applied, or in the eyes. These include skin darkening, eye irritation, dryness of the eyes, and redness of the eyelids.

If you develop a new ocular condition (e.g., trauma or infection), experience a sudden decrease in visual acuity, have ocular surgery, or develop any ocular reactions, particularly conjunctivitis and eyelid reactions, you should immediately seek your physician’s advice concerning the continued use of LATISSE® solution.
Special warnings associated with LATISSE® use.
LATISSE® solution is intended for use on the skin of the upper eyelid margins at the base of the eyelashes. Refer to the illustration below. DO NOT APPLY to the lower eyelid. If you are using LUMIGAN® or other products in the same class for elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), or if you have a history of abnormal IOP, you should only use LATISSE® under the close supervision of your physician.

LATISSE® use may cause darkening of the eyelid skin which may be reversible. LATISSE® use may also cause increased brown pigmentation of the colored part of the eye which is likely to be permanent.

It is possible for hair growth to occur in other areas of your skin that LATISSE® frequently touches. Any excess solution outside the upper eyelid margin should be blotted with a tissue or other absorbent material to reduce the chance of this from happening. It is also possible for a difference in eyelash length, thickness, fullness, pigmentation, number of eyelash hairs, and/or direction of eyelash growth to occur between eyes. These differences, should they occur, will usually go away if you stop using LATISSE®.

How light fights acne bacteria

How light fights acne bacteria

Early light-based treatments designed to address acne used UV light to eliminate blemishes, but these have fallen out of favor due to skin-damaging side effects. Today, the most popular light-based acne treatments harness the power of blue light to safely and painlessly treat inflammatory acne without harmful side effects.

The wavelength associated with blue light is able to zero in on the P. acnes bacteria and kill them without affecting other parts of the skin. It creates heat that causes the bacteria to produce "suicide" proteins, so they essentially self-destruct. Red light may be used in conjunction with the blue light to help treat the inflammation associated with acne.

Typically, eight sessions are given over a four-week period, and each session lasts about 15 minutes. You'll see results within this time, and you may even see improvement as early as two weeks in.

Fountain Of Youth In A Wine Rx? - 60 Minutes Parts 1/2

Flawless-Complexioned Cate Blanchett

Sharyn Belkin Locke knows better -- she does -- but she's admittedly attached to her anti-aging products.

"If I run out when I travel, it's a problem," says the 44-year-old art director who co-founded the handbag collection Kelly Locke. "I don't like to put something on my skin that I'm not familiar with. I don't like unknown elements."

She also knows that her loyalty to SK-II products, a Japanese skin-care line endorsed by flawless-complexioned Cate Blanchett, is based as much on the allure of sleek packaging and the luxurious formula as on the possibility that the reported active ingredient, Pitera (derived from sake yeasts), can rejuvenate the skin. "When I use it, it immediately feels great on my fingers and feels good on the face. And when I look in the mirror, my skin looks dewy and radiant."

She attributes much of her success at looking younger to exercise, eating well, drinking lots of green tea and, most important, being vigilant about sun protection. But still, she has no problem spending up to $200 on a product that probably won't do what it promises. "There are so many products out there that claim to do this or that," she says. "Do you really ever see that kind of difference? I never do."

Women's complicated relationship with their anti-aging products is of course perpetrated by the beauty industry from which they spring.

FDA Approved Eyelash Booster

FDA approves eyelash-booster
FDA health officials have recently approved Latisse as an effective medication in promoting longer, thicker and darker eyelashes.

Latisee origins from a prescription eye drop, Lumigan, originally used to relieve eye pressure and treat glaucoma; eyelash growth was reported as one of its side effects.

Recent studies have reported that the drug can effectively promote eyelash growth, thickness, and darkness when applied to eyelash roots as eyeliner.

Eye redness is the only side effect reported following the use of the drug; this mild temporary complication, however, goes away when the drug is discontinued.

Lumigan's prescription information notes warn consumers about darkening of the eyelid skin and eye color (increased iris pigmentation), which are permanent but not noticeable in short-term use.

This adverse reaction is not reported following the use of Latisse as the new drug contains only 5 percent of a Lumigan drop and it is not directly applied to the eyes.

Latisse: The Lash-Growth Drug. Top Questions, Answered

Would you pay $4 per day for longer, lusher lashes? Well, it is cheaper than a cup of (Starbucks) coffee....

Yesterday, we reported on Latisse (our new lash obesession), the first FDA-approved lash-enhancer that's clinically proven to give lashes 25 percent longer, 106 percent thicker and 18 percent darker after 16 weeks of use. Today, we talked to the company to answer some of our (and your) most pressing questions. And they gave us this rather stunning before and after shot, along with a product shot (after the jump).

What we learned: There's actually a real name for "inadequate eyelashes." Hypotrichosis is yet another condition to add to our hypochondriac laundry list. The full fringe-tastical Q&A is after the jump.

Q: What exactly does Latisse do?
A: It treats hypotrichosis (another name for inadequate eyelashes) by enhancing eyelash prominence as measured by increases in the length, thickness, and darkness of the eyelashes, and is approved by the FDA.

Q: How long can I use Latisse?
A: According to Allergan, the makers of Latisse, (see their newly launched website for more information, www.latisse.com) each prescription lasts 30 days, and there is no recommended stop time. The "peak effect" comes at roughly four months of use. Speak to your prescribing doctor about the length of treatment that's right for you.

Q: Will my lashes stay longer forever?
A: After you stop using the drug they will slowly go back to normal with your next eyelash growth cycle (this varies from person to person but is between a few weeks to a couple months).

Q: Which types of doctors can prescribe Latisse; is it only eye doctors?
A: No. In most states your regular doctor can prescribe it. Eye doctors, dermatologists, and plastic surgeons are other options. Also, there is a "Find A Doctor" locator tool on the Latisse site.

Q: How long before I start to see results?
A: Eight weeks, with peak results around four months.

Q: Can I use Latisse if I've had Lasik or wear contacts?
A: These are questions for your doctor. You should not use Latisse if you have an active eye condition, including an eye infection, or have broken or irritated skin on your eyelid. And if you are using products for elevated intraocular pressure, be sure to discuss this with your doctor. Contact lenses should be removed prior to use of Latisee and may be reinserted 15 minutes following its application.

Q: I've heard of a side effect that turns light irises dark. Is this true?
A: Good question. Latisse is an offshoot of another drug called Lumigen, which is used for glaucoma. Latisse shares the same active ingredient as Lumigen, although, according to the company that makes both, Latisse has only 5% of that ingredient and is applied only to the eyelid, not into the eye itself. Iris pigmentation was not reported for Latisse, but in less than 1% of Lumigan users, permanent brown iris pigmentation was reported. For other possible side effects, go to www.latisse.com and speak with your doctor.

Latisee : Long Lashes Now

LATISSE Lash Enhancer at The Skin Center Medical Spa
A new FDA-approved cosmetic product, LATISSE, designed to lengthen, strengthen and darken eyelashes is now available at The Skin Center Medical Spa with locations in Pittsburgh, PA and Columbus, Ohio. LATISSE, developed by Allergan, the makers of BOTOX Cosmetic, is the first and only science-based treatment approved by the FDA to enhance eyelash prominence as measured by increases in length, thickness and darkness of eyelashes.

The Skin Center Medical Spa will incorporate LATISSE into its exclusive EyeQ treatment which is a minimally-invasive eye enhancement breakthrough designed to refresh and rejuvenate tired or older eyes by eliminating wrinkles, the appearance of under eye circles and fat pads in just one quick office visit. EyeQ incorporates the use of BOTOX Cosmetic, injectable wrinkle fillers and topical treatments such as LATISSE to create a customized rejuvenation treatment based on the individual needs of each client.

“LATISSE is a tremendous breakthrough for the revitalization of brittle, weak and short lashes,” said Dr. Dominic A. Brandy, board-certified cosmetic surgeon and founding medical director of The Skin Center Medical Spa. “This product actually promotes new growth and lash thickening, which is very unique. Similar products on the market only impact existing lashes, this is the first product to actually enhance lash growth which is a very desirable quality for a youthful eye area.”

Now available at The Skin Center Medical Spa, LATISSE is a once-daily prescription treatment applied to the base of the upper eyelashes with a sterile, single-use-per-eye disposable applicator. LATISSE users can expect to experience longer, fuller and darker eyelashes in as little as eight weeks, with full results in 16 weeks. To maintain effect, continued treatment with LATISSE is required. If use of LATISSE is discontinued, eyelashes will gradually return to where they were prior to treatment over a period of weeks to months (average eyelash hair cycle).

The LATISSE Bimatoprost is the active pharmaceutical ingredient in the formulation of LATISSE and is a structural prostaglandin analog, which is a lipid compound derived from fatty acids designed to bind to prostaglandin (PG) receptors. PG receptors are present in hair, particularly in the dermal papilla and outer root sheath. Although the precise mechanism of action is unknown, PG receptors are thought to be involved in the development and regrowth of the hair follicle, by increasing the percent of hairs in, and the duration of, the anagen or growth phase.

LATISSE is available in the United States through a physician’s office only and is subject to all U.S. guidelines applicable to dispensing a prescription product.

The Skin Center Medical Spa, located in Pennsylvania and Ohio, is the region’s premier, full-service medical spa offering the latest advancements in non-invasive and minimally invasive skin rejuvenation for the treatment of aging skin, hyper-pigmentation, rosacea, unwanted hair, varicose and spider veins, active acne and acne scarring. The Skin Center Medical Spa was founded in 1981 in Pittsburgh, PA, by Dominic Brandy, MD, board-certified cosmetic surgeon. For more information about LATISSE, contact The Skin Center Medical Spa at 1-800-429-1151.

A FDA advisory panel recommended approving the drug ‘Latisse’ to promote longer, thicker, darker eyelashes. Latisee is derived from the glaucoma drug Lumigan, which is approved by FDA since 2001, as an eye drop. The drug company Allergan Inc., studied the drug to know how it promoted eyelash growth, thickness, and darkness when used as an eye liner at the roots of the eyelashes on the upper eyelid.

For study, 137 people used Latisse and 141 people used a placebo solution for 16 weeks and it was found that the Latisse group has thicker, longer and darker eyelashes at the end of the study. The people of the Latisse group were more satisfied with their lashes than those who used the placebo. According to Allergan documents submitted to the FDA, the side effects of drug were mild and temporary. The prescribing information contains that it may darken eyelid skin and gradually increases pigmentation of the iris and making eyes browner. However the iris color changes, may not be noticeable for several months to years, may be permanent but don't progress after stopping the drug. Each Latisse dose uses only 5% of a Lumigan drop.

The FDA panel recommended further studies to assess Latisse's use in certain groups of patients, such as those young people who lost their eyelashes because of chemotherapy, says Allergan news release. The drug is not approved yet and if FDA approves it, Latisse’s will be a prescription drug, not an over-the-counter cosmetic. According to the company news release, Allergan anticipates launching Latisse in 2009.

Drugs That Grow Eyelashes

Drugs That Grow Eyelashes
The real thing is hard to beat. But now there may be a way to get lashes to grow on their own, no matter what your age.
Never mind the fact that eyelashes have a real purpose - to protect the eye from dust and other foreign particles. Eyelashes, for many people, are also a symbol of beauty. But as we age, eyelashes seem to grow scarce.
So it's no wonder women are now batting their eyes at an anti-glaucoma medication with the unusual side effect of making lashes grow. But, how safe is it?
You can coat them with mascara, slather on the eyeliner, glue on false ones or even have a transplant. For so many women, long, thick, dark eyelashes are worth the effort because they're thought to project beauty, youth and sex appeal.
Sue Burns says she has what many women are going to want - the ultimate solution - a way to make eyelashes grow for real.
"I'm like, it can not be that easy," Burns said.
About two months ago, she started brushing on a medication called Lumigan. It's a prescription medication to treat glaucoma, the leading cause of blindness. One of the side effects - it seems to stimulate lash growth. Burns says within a month, hers were sprouting so much they were hitting up against her sunglasses.
"I'm like, oh my heavens this works," she said.
Burns does not have glaucoma. But she got the prescription for the medication at the Ritacca Laser and Cosmetic Center in Vernon Hills. Many staff members at the center are also using it. Once a day, they brush it on the base of their eyelashes. Many see results in a couple of weeks.
"When I feel like they are long enough, I stop using it," said Dawn Davidson, Ritacca.
The effect does not seem to be permanent.
"Definitely I noticed a difference, but I am the non-compliant patient so to speak. I really think it takes consistence for the product to work," said La Toya Norman, Ritacca.
Ophthalmologist Dan Ritacca says he has no problem prescribing the drug for an off-label use. And others are doing the same. Ritacca says even though he feels the medication is safe, he still requires patients to undergo an exam every six months. "I'm seeing a lot of happy patients and a lot of excitement in the field," Ritacca said. "For people who don't have eyelashes who may have undergone chemotherapy or just weren't blessed with these long beautiful lashes."
This is the latest in the blurring of the line between cosmetics and drugs. The active ingredient in Lumigan is called bimatoprost. It's part of a class of drugs called prostaglandins. There are other glaucoma drugs with prostaglandins. They treat the disease by reducing pressure in the eye. But why they make lashes grow is still a mystery.
Loyola ophthalmologist Anad Mantravadi agreed the medication is fairly safe but says he would not prescribe the glaucoma drug just to help someone grow bigger lashes.
"I think people would be less tolerant of having inflammation inside the eye or swelling in the back of the retina when the intended use was just for lengthening eye lashes," Mantravadi said.
Doctors say the medication can cause darkening of skin around the eyes or it can change eye color. Much rarer side effects include swelling and inflammation.
Still, women who can find a doctor willing to order up the medication are more than comfortable giving it a try.
"This is wonderful to have your own lashes," Burns said.
Allergan, the company which makes the anti-wrinkle drug Botox also makes Lumigan. It has the exclusive patents on prostaglandins for use in stimulating eyelash growth and has stopped other companies from using them in their products. Allergan also stresses it does not approve of the off-label use of Lumigan. But the company is planning on coming out with its own eyelash product and expects Food and Drug Administration approval sometime next year.

Miss Atom

Miss Atom, the beauty contest for the Russian nuclear industry, has earned a fair amount of press, in part because of the now-infamous photo of a post-Soviet hottie posing in front of some cooling towers. But the anti-nuke crowd has its own contest: The Environmentals.

The rules? "Use real nuclear power plants as backdrop for fashion or glamor shots! No lab montage or Photoshop!" Clothing, as this shot from the decommissioned Trojan nuclear power plant in Oregon demonstrates, is optional. (Some of the originals, obviously, are NSFW.)

Thus far, the contest has received only seven entries; Miss Atom, on the other hand, has dozens of contestants. Voting is still ongoing at Miss Atom, by the way. Yulia Nechayeva of Polyarnye Zori is in the lead with 1,149 points; DANGER ROOM favorite Alyona Kirsanova is in fourth place.

Energize Your Face

Whether you’re a busy college student with exams to study for and papers to write or a working busybody with too much to do, getting a full night’s rest is oftentimes not an option. Unfortunately, neglecting a good night’s rest tends to show up directly on your face, which can ruin anyone’s day. Luckily, there are a few steps you can follow in the mornings to banish any signs of an all-nighter.

One of the easiest ways to reenergize your face after a long night is to take a shower. However, don’t just make this a regular shower. Before stepping in, apply a rich and creamy moisturizing facial mask or a thick layer of facial moisturizer. Also add a layer of petroleum jelly to your lips. The combination of the facial mask or moisturizer with the heat of the water will cause your skin to become plump and soft. This is ideal for getting rid of creases and fine lines that can creep up on your complexion from too many late nights or those annoying lines that can appear from sleeping on your pillow. Afterwards, gently wipe off the moisturizer and petroleum jelly with a warm washcloth.

You can also spice up your morning rinse by using an energizing body scrub and lathering your body from head to toe with a good loofah. There are plenty of body scrubs that contain special ingredients that are perfect for stimulating blood flow and circulation, as well as invigorating your skin and the senses so you step out alert and ready to take on the day. As your shower comes to an end, gradually make the water cool for the final rinse.

To get the rest of your body going, taking a few minutes out of your morning to do some quick exercises can help whip you into shape and get your adrenaline going. Ideally, 20 minutes of jogging, walking or other type of aerobics will give your face a rosy and healthy complexion. But if you don’t have the time, just five minutes of jumping jacks can still get the job done.

One of the areas hit hardest by late nights is the eye area. From bags to dark circles and puffiness, your eyes definitely pay the price. To battle puffiness, store your favorite eye cream or serum in the fridge the night before. This will make the cream extra cool and soothing to your puffy eyes. Look for eye creams that contain botanicals that are known for their revitalizing properties, such as cucumber, chamomile and briar rose. Having a good concealer handy will take care of any dark circles or blemishes. When covering up problem areas, be sure to stay away from lighter shades and white cover-ups. Stick to yellow or skin-tone shades. For the rest of your makeup look, keep it minimal. To have a truly healthy complexion, skip the foundation and powder and instead only apply blush and lipstick with rosy shades. Browns and beiges should be avoided when it comes to makeup colors since these can cause your complexion to look dull, tired, and less vibrant.

Are Nano Creams Safe

anoparticles, which are 80 times thinner than a human hair, are used by firms including Boots, The Body Shop, Avon, Nivea and Unilever, especially for UV filters in sunscreens.

Some manufacturers believe the technology can deliver the benefits of products in a more effective way.

But critics say the size of the particles may allow them to permeate protective barriers in the body, such as those surrounding the brain or a developing baby in the womb.

Their scale also changes the way they interact with other cells, which might lead to unforeseen toxic effects.

Following a report which raised concerns that some firms are not declaring their use of nanoparticles, Which? has called for the technology to be banned unless it is proved to be safe.

Its concerns have been backed by Professor Dame Ann Dowling, of the Royal Society, the UK's independent science academy.

She has condemned the beauty industry for failing to provide information on safety testing and use of the controversial ingredients.

Research by Which? found that 87 per cent of customers are unaware that the technology is in use.

The consumer group wrote to 67 cosmetics companies asking them about their use of nanotechnology, the benefits they thought it brought and how they ensured product safety.

Only 17 responded - and only eight were willing to provide information about their use of nanotechnology or particles.

Meanwhile, scientists surveyed by the consumer group expressed concerns about the use of carbon fullerenes, which appear in a number of anti-ageing creams.

Nanoparticles are also used to make sunscreens transparent on the skin. But although firms say they offer greater protection against the sun, EU experts have asked for more safety tests to investigate their effect on sunburnt skin.

Which? said: "Our experts raised particular concerns about potential toxicity of fullerenes if they were able to penetrate the skin. They were also concerned about the widespread use of nano titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in sunscreens, when further research still needs to be done on their safety in nano form."

Some beauty firms are also using nano silver, which has anti-bacterial properties, in products such as toothpaste. But Which? says there are fears it may be toxic.

Sue Davies, of Which?, said: "The cosmetics industry needs to stop burying its head in the sand and come clean about how it is using nanotechnology.

"The Government must introduce a compulsory reporting scheme for manufactured nanomaterials so we are all aware - and only those that are independently assessed as safe should be allowed to be used in cosmetics."

Large-Volume Liposuction Deemed Safe

Liposuction that removes large amounts of body fat can be a safe option for managing obesity in select patients, a new study suggests.

Traditionally, liposuction was used for so-called body contouring — removing small pockets of excess fat to reshape a person's figure. But in more recent years, as liposuction techniques have advanced, the procedure has also been used to remove large amounts of fat in obese patients.

Studies have suggested that such "large-volume" liposuction can be safely done in healthy, carefully selected patients.

These latest findings, from a study of 60 healthy obese women, add to evidence that large-volume liposuction is effective, and relatively low-risk.

None of the patients suffered a major complication from the procedure, according to Dr. Youseff Saleh and colleagues at Assiut University Hospital in Egypt.

Minor complications included skin irregularities in 20 percent of the patients, and seromas — a buildup of fluid in areas where fat had been removed — in 15 percent, the researchers report in the International Archives of Medicine.

After four months, the women had lost about 30 pounds, on average, and also showed some of the benefits that come with weight loss, including lower blood pressure and blood sugar.

The findings, according to Saleh and his colleagues, show that large-volume liposuction "can be safely performed" and produce positive changes in a person's body shape and health.

The procedure is not right for all overweight adults, however.

In general, experts recommend that people consider it only if they are in good health both physically and mentally, and are willing to make long-term diet and lifestyle changes. They should also choose a surgeon experienced in large-volume liposuction, and have the procedure at a hospital or surgery facility equipped to deal with any complications that could occur

Stylish Hair Trends

Helena Faccenda, the go-to hair gal for Heidi Klum, dishes the exclusive tips to keep hair under control when temps are down.

1. Wear a hat.

“It’s not only stylish, but also keeps your head and ears warm from the cold air.”

2. For a ‘do to match this season’s structure fashion, Faccenda has the perfect sleek bun to complement the style.

“Use a high shine gel and disperse the product all over the outer coat of your hair. Using a brush with extremely soft bristles, gently brush the outer coasting of your hair in an upward direction, creating the perfect sleek bun or ponytail on top of your head.”

3. For soft waves, spray damp to dry hair with a volumizing spray.

Faccenda then says to flip your hair upside down, make three sections of your hair and braid each section up, starting at the nape of your neck. “Once the braids are completed, fasten them together into a bun that sits on top of our head. In the morning simply take out the braids and you’re left with super volume and beautiful waves.”

4. Faccenda also recommends making the cut.

“The rich, heavier fabrics and fashions of winter, like turtlenecks and scarves, lend themselves to short hair.”

Lipo Instead Of Lunch

"Where are we going to go eat today?" "What are you doing during lunch hour?" These questions in various forms are spouted around that 12 o'clock hour in offices all over the country. The typical response usually involves a restaurant name or news that an office underling is running out to fetch lunch for everyone. This could all be changing very soon.

Picture this scenario- a successful young professional woman with a bustling business calendar and an equally packed social schedule. No way she wants to use those precious two weeks of vacation to lie on her couch recuperating after undergoing traditional liposuction! And now there is no reason she has to. With Velashape, she can achieve the same results with hour long sessions once a week for just four to six weeks. Dr. Robert Aycock, a leader in the cosmetic surgery industry with two offices in the San Francisco Bay Area, says that Velashape "reduces the thighs and abdomen by inches without surgery". He should know- he routinely performs the procedure that has drawn rave reviews and nearly instant results.

Sahaja Yoga was developed by Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi. It involves the awakening of a subtle spiritual energy known as the Kundalini which lies dormant in the sacrum bone, rolled up in a spiral of three-and-a-half coils. How To: Create Sexy Supermodel Curls

How to Curl Hair

Toss the flat irons................Curls and only curls are hot for Spring and Summer 2009

1.
Wet your hair. It doesn't have to be dripping wet, because it will take longer to dry. It just needs to be damp enough for water to come in contact with every strand. This initial wetting serves to break the hydrogen bonds in your hair so that you can "reset" them in following steps. Applying mousse or a light gel helps your curls keep their shape because it will stiffen, although putting too much can make your hair feel hard or sticky.

* The only time you shouldn't wet your hair is if you're going to be using a curling iron or hot rollers, which will apply heat directly to the hair; the resulting hot water can burn your hair. If you use mousse or gel with these methods, let them dry completely first.

*
Straight hair has hydrogen bonds linking the proteins that make up the strand. Since straight hair doesn't have enough disulfide bonds to make the hair "bend" (i.e. curl) the hydrogen bonds form close together along a straight strand.
*
Curly hair has strong disulfide bonds because of the natural structure of the hair proteins, which a person with curly hair is born with. Even though hydrogen bonds aren't as strong, you can "train" them to act like disulfide bonds, at least temporarily.
2. Shape your hair into curls. There are various ways to do this, depending on the type of curl you're going for, how easily your hair curls, and the amount of effort you're willing to put in. Click on the following links for more information on various methods:

* Foam Rollers - Gentle on the hair, more comfortable to sleep with them on; time consuming and somewhat difficult to do without the help of a friend (unless hair is short); using different sizes of rollers adds more flexibility in desired style
* Braids - Easy to do, just need bands to tie braids; comfortable to sleep in; makes curls that are more zig-zag in shape.
* Curling Iron - Good for making perfect spiral curls; can be time consuming and especially damaging for hair.
* Rollers - Time consuming and somewhat difficult to do without the help of a friend (unless hair is short); using different sizes of rollers adds more flexibility in desired style.

o Hot rollers (which are applied to dry hair) create more of a soft, romantic look, but the curls don't last as long.[1]
* Bobby Pins - "Pin curls" were popular in the 1920s, especially on shorter hair, for making well-defined, skinny curls worn tight to the head.
* Straighteners - Even though straighteners (flat irons) are designed to be used to straighten hair, they can also be adapted for creating soft curls, usually curlier at the ends.
* Hair Sticks - Instead of wrapping a strand of hair around a roller, you wrap it around a stick, resulting in tighter curls.
* Fabric/Rags - More comfortable than rollers; produce effects similar to pins, but fabric is easier to work with and sleep on.
* Knots - If you don't have anything to curl your hair with at all, tying it into knots can create curls if done properly.
3. Apply heat. The heat helps to break any remaining hydrogen bonds. This step is optional. If you curl your hair often, the repetitive application of heat can eventually damage your hair. Hair can be curled without heat, but you'll have to let the hair set for a longer period of time and the curls might not last as long.

* You can apply heat with a hair dryer, but don't let the air blow individual strands (particularly shorter ends) out of the curl; place a barrier (such as a bandanna) over your hair when you blow dry.
* If you're using a curling iron or hot rollers, you're combining this with the previous step because you're curling and heating at the same time. Keep in mind, however, that even though a curling iron can produce beautiful curls, it's more damaging to your hair than any other method because the higher heat destabilizes the proteins that your hair is made of.[2]
4.
Let the curls set. The new hydrogen bonds that will keep your hair curly only form as your hair dries and cools. If you pull your hair out of the curled shape before it's completely dry and cool then the weight of your hair will break some of the hydrogen bonds and it will not curl as well. If you're using a curling iron, hold the strand in a curled shape until it completely cools. Spritz hairspray to essentially "glue" the hydrogen bonds in place. If you're going for a casual look, you may want to scrunch your hair.
5. Waterproof your hair. If it's at all humid or rainy where you are (or where you're going) apply a pomade or oil to prevent moisture from penetrating your hair strands. Remember how wetting your hair breaks hydrogen bonds? Now that hydrogen bonds are keeping your hair curly, you don't want moisture in the form of humidity or rain to come in contact with your strands of hair because they'll reset your hydrogen bonds and your curls will be gone like the wind.

Beauty Tips From Around The World

Six Simple Wrinkle Free Tips

Six simple wrinkle free tips. You may think that face wrinkles just happen when you reach a certain age and there’s nothing you can do about it. But there are things we can all do to prevent wrinkles from happening in the first place.

You may already do everything you can to prevent skin wrinkles - eating right, protecting your skin from the sun, not smoking, drinking lots of water.

One thing you may not have thought about is getting wrinkle free skin by training yourself to avoid certain facial expressions and body positions.

After all a wrinkle is simple a crease in your skin. Some face wrinkles are inevitable but what you do with your face and how you hold your body every minute of the day has a lot to do with it as well.

Here’s six things you can start doing now to help yourself on the way to being wrinkle free:

1. Cut down on your pillows. Sleep with one pillow not two to avoid a double chin and wrinkling around the neck.
2. Don’t sleep on your frontSquashing your face into your pillow is not good for your skin. If you often wake up with a crumpled face over time those creases will stick!
3. Don’t read in bed and if you do lie on your back with one pillow holding the book above you. Never prop yourself up with the book on your stomach - unless you want a double chin!
4. Stand up straight Imagine you’re being pulled upright by a piece of string going through the center of your body and out of the top of your head. Standing up straight and holding your head properly means your face and neck are not pulled down or to the the side creating wrinkles and sagging.
5. Retrain your face to avoid causing wrinkles. Frown lines and brow furrows don’t just happen - you cause them by making repeated facial movements. Sit in front of the mirror and see what happens when you frown or wrinkle your brow. Chances are you are doing this a lot without realizing it. Learn to recognize the sensation. Then hold you face still without frowning and wrinkling. Practice keeping your face still during the day - at first you’ll have to think about it and then it will come entirely naturally. Not only will you look better and feel much more positive but you’ll gradually remove the wrinkles and create smoother skin - without paying a fortune for botox!
6. Try some Frownies. A celebrity anti aging secret Frownies Wrinkle free - six simple tips are small skin-colored adhesive papers you stick on your forehead preventing you from frowning. Sounds unbelievable doesn’t it? Apparently used regularly they really work to help frowns disappear and make your whole forehead smoother.

OK to say you could be wrinkle free by following these steps is a bit of an exaggeration - but retraining your body and face can help prevent wrinkles and retain your younger look for longer.
