A list of ingredients that have a positive impact on the youthfulness of the skin has also emerged, and one of the latest to achieve significant recognition is a by-product of the Coffea arabica plant, or coffee bush.
CoffeeBerry is an extract of the fruit of the coffee bush, a bright red cherry that contains the coffee bean. Until recently, growers threw the fruit away after harvesting the bean because it decayed too quickly to process.
As with many plants, the nutritional benefits are distributed throughout the bean and fruit. In the case of CoffeeBerry, this includes a high concentration of incredibly powerful antioxidants called polyphenols. These help to prevent damage caused by free radicals and oxidative stress, the primary causes of skin ageing.
“CoffeeBerry is loaded with polyphenols,” explains Dr Leslie Baumann, a skin expert, dermatologist, and chief of the Division of Cosmetic Dermatology at the University of Miami School of Medicine.
“Polyphenols are an important part of the human diet, and they are a key ingredient in a wide range of fruits, vegetables, grains, green and black tea, and coffee beans,” Dr Baumann says. “Research during the last several years has shown the potential benefits of these compounds.”
CoffeeBerry® extract is a new, powerful antioxidant that uses the whole fruit of the coffee plant. It may turn out to be the most potent of natural antioxidants, better than white tea, blueberries, and pomegranates. It is currently available in a limited number of skin care products, but look for many more in the future.
