Kate Moss Goes Bronze

British sculptor Marc Quinn is ready to unveil his latest creation to the world, a nearly $2.8 million, 110-pound solid gold statue of the supermodel, hyped as the largest such creation built since ancient Egypt.

Quinn, the artist behind 2006's Sphinx, a painted bronze statue of Moss in a somewhat provocative yoga pose, has dubbed his new golden girl Siren.

And the British Museum has already heeded its call.

Good News-Chocolate

Chocolate lovers, take heart. Reports from recent studies have given you plenty of reasons to keep on eating chocolate without feeling guilty. In fact, the news from several studies released this spring shows that chocolate is quite effective against the number one killer of Americans, heart disease. Another serious threat to our health, environmental pollution, was significantly reduced by eating chocolate. And the news is even better for females.

Studies and results

Epidemiologic investigations have supported the hypothesis that regular consumption of flavonoid-containing foods reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. While flavonoids are found in many plants, cocoa is particularly rich in a subclass of flavonoids known as flavanols. Several dietary intervention trials with flavanol containing cocoa products have shown improvements in endothelial and platelet function, as well as blood pressure. These studies have provided direct evidence of the benefits of flavanol containing foods and have helped to substantiate the epidemiological data.

Slow Aging Down With Jogging

Regular running slows the effects of aging, according to a new study from Stanford University School of Medicine that has tracked 500 older runners for more than 20 years. Elderly runners have fewer disabilities, a longer span of active life and are half as likely as aging non-runners to die early deaths, the research found.

"The study has a very pro-exercise message," said James Fries, MD, an emeritus professor of medicine at the medical school and the study's senior author. "If you had to pick one thing to make people healthier as they age, it would be aerobic exercise." The new findings will appear in the Aug. 11 issue of the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.

Exercise In A Pill

That's how researchers are describing two drugs that apparently mimic the effects of physical exercise on the body, raising prospects of new treatments against diseases, new ways to cheat at sports, and new rationalizations for couch potatoes to stuff themselves at brunch.

In a series of startling experiments in mice, the drugs improved the ability of cells to burn fat and retain muscle mass, and they substantially prolonged endurance during exercise. Using one of the compounds for just a month, even sedentary, couch-potato mice improved their endurance running by a staggering 44%. Some mice that combined a month of exercise with the other drug bolstered their long-distance running by about 70% over untreated mice.

One of the drugs is already in late-stage human trials for other purposes, and the mouse experiments raise hopes for new strategies to protect people against obesity, diabetes and muscle-wasting diseases such as muscular dystrophy.

But underscoring the risks, one of the compounds has been withdrawn from human trials because of toxic side effects, and researchers said that the drugs could easily be abused by competitive athletes to enhance their performance. Researchers have already devised a test to detect them in blood and urine.

Coffeeberry Anti aging Properties

A list of ingredients that have a positive impact on the youthfulness of the skin has also emerged, and one of the latest to achieve significant recognition is a by-product of the Coffea arabica plant, or coffee bush.

CoffeeBerry is an extract of the fruit of the coffee bush, a bright red cherry that contains the coffee bean. Until recently, growers threw the fruit away after harvesting the bean because it decayed too quickly to process.

As with many plants, the nutritional benefits are distributed throughout the bean and fruit. In the case of CoffeeBerry, this includes a high concentration of incredibly powerful antioxidants called polyphenols. These help to prevent damage caused by free radicals and oxidative stress, the primary causes of skin ageing.

“CoffeeBerry is loaded with polyphenols,” explains Dr Leslie Baumann, a skin expert, dermatologist, and chief of the Division of Cosmetic Dermatology at the University of Miami School of Medicine.

“Polyphenols are an important part of the human diet, and they are a key ingredient in a wide range of fruits, vegetables, grains, green and black tea, and coffee beans,” Dr Baumann says. “Research during the last several years has shown the potential benefits of these compounds.”
CoffeeBerry® extract is a new, powerful antioxidant that uses the whole fruit of the coffee plant. It may turn out to be the most potent of natural antioxidants, better than white tea, blueberries, and pomegranates. It is currently available in a limited number of skin care products, but look for many more in the future.
