SAN DIEGO -- A new medical procedure that claims to melt away fat better than traditional liposuction is the subject of debate in San Diego's medical community.
The FDA approved laser-liposuction according to NBC in San Diego, only one doctor and a few dozen patients in San Diego have tried the new technique.

Laser liposuction is performed in a doctor's office under a light, local anesthetic. Dr. Jeffry Shafer of New Image Cosmetic Surgery in Coronado is currently offering the procedure at his office.
Laser lipo works by using heat from a red-tipped laser to melt away fat under the skin, according to Shafer. This "melting effect" allows him to use a smaller instrument to suction out the excess fat, he said.
Shafer said the procedure leaves the skin smoother than traditional lipo because it's "disrupting fat cells and heating collagen below the skin."
But there's no evidence laser lipo works, according to Dr. Mitchel Goldman, a cosmetic surgeon at SPA MD.
Goldman told NBC that when used improperly, lasers can burn your skin and leave scars.
Schafer said less than 1 percent of his patients return for corrective surgery. That's compared to about 12 percent of traditional liposuction patients who return for revisions.
Laser lipo treatments are not cheap. Treatments cost about $2,000 for each area you want zapped.
